On 15 August 2026 an original anime series was announced at D23, to stream on Disney Channel and Disney+. Kingdom Hearts has always asked one question — where the heart is — and its themes of memory, missing hearts and connection sit squarely in attachment territory. All 12 characters are set out here by MBTI and attachment style, argued from what they do in the games.
This page reads 12 Kingdom Hearts characters through three layers: MBTI as the outward personality, attachment style as the hidden side, and a Big Five type. Rather than simply assigning a type, Why this type from what they do in the story and where they came from — that is how this site works.
📊 Attachment style distribution across the Kingdom Hearts cast
The comparison baseline is the attachment split across 42,256 quiz responses: 30.1% secure, 15.5% anxious, 13.7% avoidant, 40.6% fearful-avoidant.
Sora and Riku grew up on the same island and longed for the same outside world. One talked to people; the other built a raft alone. What separated them was not ability but how they hold distance. That the three Nobodies — Roxas, Xion, Axel — are said to have no hearts and still divide cleanly into fearful-avoidant, fearful-avoidant and avoidant is evidence that this series is about ways of relating.
🧩 Reading the relationships in Kingdom Hearts through attachment
Underneath the spectacle of Disney and Final Fantasy mixed together, Kingdom Hearts has consistently asked one thing: where the heart is. Losing memory, becoming a body without a heart, carrying someone else's heart asleep inside you — put into the language of attachment, every one of these describes a state in which you cannot confirm who you are or who you are connected to.
The contrast between Sora and Riku sits at the centre of it. Of two boys raised on the same island, longing for the same outside world, one talked to people and the other built a raft alone. After reaching for the darkness, Riku keeps helping without letting his friends see him. Protecting someone without meeting them is the most painful part of the fearful-avoidant pattern: believing that getting close will drag the other person in, the only available shape is to guard from a distance.
And the one who kept standing between them was Kairi. The charm she handed over functions as the only proof of connection while they are apart. Making an object or a promise the guarantee of a relationship is a textbook anxious behaviour. Staying connected to both by choosing neither was not indecision; it was a hard refusal to lose anyone.
The Nobodies, who are supposed to have no hearts, make it even plainer. Roxas wants somewhere to belong and then walks out of it himself. The moment Xion realises her existence damages someone, she chooses to disappear. Axel never drops the flippancy and lets his real feeling slip exactly once, at the end. All three are given the premise of having no emotions, and yet what they actually do divides cleanly along differences in how they hold distance. That it is written as a pattern of relating rather than as an absence in the setting is what makes this series interesting.
[15 August 2026] An original anime series has been announced. It was revealed during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026, held in Anaheim, and it will stream on Disney Channel and Disney+. Nana Gadd of Disney & Pixar Games and Tai Yasue of Square Enix are involved, and the announcement states explicitly that it is a co-production with Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the games, and the Square Enix creative team.
What matters is that this is not a retelling but a wholly new, original story. The announcement describes it as a new story that widens the world of Kingdom Hearts and as a celebration of the characters who have captured fans around the world, positioning it as inspired by the games. The teaser visual released so far shows only the back of a figure with a Keyblade over one shoulder, and does not say who it is. No release window has been announced either.
Alongside it, the next game in the series, Kingdom Hearts IV, was announced with a release window in the second half of 2027. A livestream titled KINGDOM HEARTS DEEP DIVE (Live from D23) was also scheduled for 16 August, with more information expected. Since the anime is entirely new, how the existing characters will be written is an open question — but the typings set out on this page are argued from what they do in the games. Reading them again after watching the anime should show exactly what the adaptation changed.
A frank note about the typing, to finish. There is no settled reading of MBTI for Kingdom Hearts. Put the two best-known English articles side by side — ScreenRant and TheGamer — and they disagree on every character except Xehanort as INTJ. Sora comes out ESFP in one and ISFP in the other; Riku is variously ISTP, INTJ and ENTJ; Kairi ESFJ and INFP; Aqua ISTJ and ESFJ. Fan polls split between ENFP and ISFP for Sora too. So rather than copying someone else's call, we state the grounds: what the character actually did. The decisive scene named in each entry is that ground.

🗝️ Sora: MBTI ENFP, attachment Secure
Reach out to someone you are meeting for the first time. Even if I lose you, I can continue to believe that I will meet you again.
MBTI radar (ENFP dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Sora is ENFP × Secure
This quiz reads Sora as ENFP through extraverted intuition (Ne): he sees possibilities and acts on them. His openness to new companions and care for existing bonds suggest a secure tendency here, without implying that he has never been hurt or doubted himself.
🌊 Riku: MBTI INTJ, attachment Fearful-avoidant
I made a plan to leave the island by myself and hid my exposure to darkness. While seeking light, I am drawn to darkness.
MBTI radar (INTJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Riku is INTJ × Fearful-avoidant
This quiz reads Riku's foresight and follow-through through INTJ, introverted intuition (Ni) and extraverted thinking (Te). He dreams of life beyond the island with his friends and later struggles with light and darkness. Wanting closeness while fearing he may endanger others informs this site's fearful-avoidant interpretation, not an official or clinical assessment.
💐 Kairi: MBTI ESFJ, attachment Anxious
A role that connects two people. The amulet I gave him is in the form of a promise that he will return.
MBTI radar (ESFJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Kairi is ESFJ × Anxious
This quiz reads Kairi's care for her bonds with Sora and Riku through ESFJ and extraverted feeling (Fe). Waiting and the promise represented by her charm inform an anxious reading, but she also acts and trains; waiting alone does not define her.
🌇 Roxas: MBTI ISFP, attachment Fearful-avoidant
Without knowing who I am, I seek a place to belong and leave that place on my own.
MBTI radar (ISFP dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Roxas is ISFP × Fearful-avoidant
This quiz reads Roxas's attention to his own experience and identity through ISFP and introverted feeling (Fi). He values his friends while questioning the role imposed by the Organization. The tension between connection and withdrawal informs a fearful-avoidant reading, but leaving a controlling environment is not simply fear of intimacy.
🔥 Accelerator: MBTI ENTP, attachment Avoidant
Conceal your true feelings with light talk. "There is no one who remembers me," was the only thing he really meant.
MBTI radar (ENTP dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Accelerator is ENTP × Avoidant
This quiz reads Axel's adaptability and playful manner through ENTP and extraverted intuition (Ne). He sometimes masks conflict with humour, yet repeatedly acts on his friendships. The avoidant reading concerns his guardedness, not an absence of feelings or sincerity.
🐚 Shion: MBTI INFJ, attachment Fearful-avoidant
I realized that someone else would be harmed by my presence, so I chose to disappear.
MBTI radar (INFJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Shion is INFJ × Fearful-avoidant
This quiz reads Xion's concern for identity and companions through INFJ, introverted intuition (Ni) and extraverted feeling (Fe). In circumstances where others exploit her, she faces painful choices affecting herself and her friends. Fearful-avoidant is one interpretive lens, not a claim that she should disappear or that her personality caused her situation.
💧 Aqua: MBTI ISTJ, attachment Secure
Follow the master's teachings. He remained uncorrupted for ten years in the world of darkness.
MBTI radar (ISTJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Aqua is ISTJ × Secure
This quiz reads Aqua's commitment to teachings, promises and companions through ISTJ and introverted sensing (Si). She endures prolonged isolation in the realm of darkness and also experiences despair. The secure reading concerns her investment in connection, not immunity to distress or an ability to withstand everything through personality alone.
🪨 Terra: MBTI INFJ, attachment Anxious
They saw through my desire to be recognized and took advantage of it. A type whose weakness has become a sense of responsibility.
MBTI radar (INFJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Terra is INFJ × Anxious
Terra wants recognition and also wants to protect people he cares about. This quiz reads him through INFJ, introverted intuition (Ni) and extraverted feeling (Fe), linking uncertainty around approval to an anxious tendency. The manipulation he faces also matters; his desire for approval does not explain everything.
🍃 Ventus: MBTI ESFP, attachment Secure
Be honest and live in the moment. I can say without hesitation that my friends come first.
MBTI radar (ESFP dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Ventus is ESFP × Secure
This quiz reads Ventus's engagement with the present and care for friends through ESFP and extraverted sensing (Se). His openness to care and companionship informs a secure reading, without denying his complicated past or vulnerable moments.
🌑 Xehanort: MBTI INTJ, attachment Avoidant
Sees people only as vessels. Even my own mind is made into parts for a long plan.
MBTI radar (INTJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Xehanort is INTJ × Avoidant
This quiz reads Xehanort's long planning through INTJ and introverted intuition (Ni). His manipulation of others is harm within the story. The avoidant label is an interpretation, not a claim that manipulation is inherent to avoidant tendencies or INTJ, and it does not erase his bond with Eraqus.
👑 Mickey: MBTI ENFJ, attachment Secure
I will not abandon anyone. From the position of the king, he goes to pick up the person in front of him.
MBTI radar (ENFJ dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Mickey is ENFJ × Secure
This quiz reads Mickey's personal care for companions, despite his royal role, through ENFJ and extraverted feeling (Fe). His trust and support suggest a secure tendency, without claiming he always saves everyone or never makes mistakes.
✏️ Namine: MBTI INFP, attachment Anxious
He even tried to get involved by rewriting his memory. It was the only way to connect.
MBTI radar (INFP dominant four axes + attachment stability)
Big Five radar (five factors + hidden-side axis)
Why Namine is INFP × Anxious
This quiz reads Naminé's sensitivity to her own and others' circumstances through INFP and introverted feeling (Fi). Others exploit her power over memories, and she later works to repair the effects. The anxious interpretation explores connection and responsibility, without reducing actions under coercion to a wish to be loved.
